Fr Daniele's Daily Homily - Sunday 10th May

10th May 2020 (English/Italiano)
5th EASTER SUNDAY/5ª DOMENICA DI PASQUA

Today's Gospel is in the context of the Last Supper. Jesus wants to leave his legacy to the disciples and so to give them peace in that tense moment. First of all, he says: "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God still, and trust in me." How much we also need to hear these words during this tough time! Only God can give us peace in troubled moments like these. Jesus is the Lord and everything is in his hands. What that gives us real peace is the perspective of eternal life, which Jesus opens up to his disciples and so to us: "There are many rooms in my Father’s house; if there were not, I should have told you. I am going now to prepare a place for you, and after I have gone and prepared you a place, I shall return to take you with me; so that where I am you may be too." We can be afraid of thinking about eternal life too much, but this is the path of hope that Jesus opened up to us.

Through his resurrection, Jesus gave us the guarantee that there is eternal life after death. This statement is not as obvious as we think. Before Christ, different peoples, including the Jews, in their religion had a vague idea of life after death. Moreover, there have always been atheists, who have become more and more numerous in the last few centuries. If we are sincere, each one of us can also experience doubts, as we can't prove the existence of eternal life in a scientific way. Even saints like St Therese of Lisieux experienced serious doubts about that, even though they tried to believe with all their hearts. It's actually a matter of faith, that is, of believing from the bottom of our heart. We can all have the intuition and the certainty that this is the truth. All the efforts and sufferings of this life make sense only in the light of eternal life. We are walking towards eternal happiness. Heaven is the real homeland of all of us.

At some point, this world will stop existing too. As we usually forget about these truths, we are often quite wrapped in the worries, distractions and even harmful things of this world. Jesus wants to remind us that everything is temporary. The Coronavirus crisis compelled us to rethink our way of life. If we, little by little, come back to normal, we should question whether many things we used to live were really normal. Today the Word of God invites us to take care of our soul, first of all, as the apostles claim in the first reading: "We will continue to devote ourselves to prayer and to the service of the Word". The different tasks we have in our life can be very good, but we don't have to forget the main vocation of all of us, which St Peter recalls in the second reading: "you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a consecrated nation, a people set apart to sing the praises of God who called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light." We can start to experience this wonderful light here and now. We will understand that everything else is nothing compared to God's love. We will also love others in a much purer way. Eternal happiness will start here and now.

Abbiate fede in Dio e abbiate fede anche in me."
