From Fr Greg's Desk: Sunday 3rd September, 2023

Hi everyone!
Happy Father's Day to all out Fathers and Grandfathers
Yes, it is that time of the year again, when we thank our Fathers and Grandfathers for their own special vocation within the Church. We will be celebrating your presence in our pews with our annual "Father of the Year" award, taking place at the end of every one of our six regular 'Sunday' Masses. God bless you all - even if the award doesn't come your way, you are all champions!!

Welcome to Fr. Rodrigo Carrizo, FMVD.
This week we welcome back Fr. Rodrigo, a native of Spain, who is the current President of the Verbum Dei Missionary Fraternity to which we four priests (and Br. Antonio) belong. He will be with us for two weeks, making a pastoral visit to our Verbum Dei members.

Fr. Rodrigo made a brief visit here prior to our taking on the Parish back in 2017. He does understand some English, so please make him very welcome.

Farewell to John McCaffrey, leaving on a Missionary Journey with Verbum Dei in the Philippines.
We farewell John McCaffrey this week, one of our youth team members, as he leaves on the adventure of a lifetime as a budding young "Verbum Dei Missionary". John came to us last year from our Chaplaincy work at Macquarie University where Fr. Daniele is the Catholic Chaplain.

Originally from Hunters Hill Parish, John will be joining our Formation Course for new Verbum Dei missionaries in Quezon City (Manila) with two other young men from Vietnam. (He has penned his own farewell on the opposite page)

John has been actively engaged with our Ignite youth group and Sunday Kid's Liturgies - not to mention his 'manning of the coffee cart' at the School of the Word on Tuesday evening. He has been very active over the last year at Macquarie University alongside Fr. Daniele. John recently returned from World Youth Day with the Pope in Portugal as part of our 28-strong 'youth contingent'.

We wish you all the very best with your vocation, John, and look forward to hearing more about your new missionary life as it evolves. (You can catch an article about John in the next edition of the Catholic Weekly.)

Next Weekend 10 September is the St. Charles Primary School and Parish Fete
Just a friendly reminder that our biennial School Fete at St. Charles Ryde will be taking place next week. (See info box on Page 3). It starts at the end of the 10 am Mass and ends at 4 pm. So, come along and be part of the fun, and support them - and us - in this really important fundraising initiative. Please be advised that parking will be VERY LIMITED at SCB Ryde due to the Fete, so you might consider 'ride sharing' or 'drop-offs' for next weekend's Masses...

Parish Verbum Dei Retreat Saturday 16 September 9 am - 5 pm at Holy Cross College Ryde
Come along for our next day of prayer and reflection, away from the bustle, at Holy Cross Ryde. Brought to you by your resident Verbum Dei people, it is free of charge - just bring your own lunch, a bible, pen and paper and a desire to find out more about your faith. This time we follow on from the World Youth Day theme: "Mary arose and went with haste" ... from Luke 1, 39. See you there!

Topsoil Repair Work at St. Charles - Please Keep Off The Grass!!
As you may have noted, a large section of lawn on the school side of St. Charles Borromeo Church has recently received some 'TLC' from Keith Stanshall, our maintenance man at the Parish. The work has been done to help level out the divots and depressions that have developed over the years due to the land being a former cemetery.

Please assist us by helping to keep people, children (and dogs!) outside the temporary barrier so that the grass can grow through and make the area resplendent by summer.

And that's about it for now. The gardens are looking lovely, and spring is definitely 'in the air', so I hope you all have a beautiful week ahead. God bless you all, and again, Happy Father's Day!

Your brother, in Christ's ongoing missionary service,

Fr. Greg
