Catechist Sunday

This weekend we celebrate Catechist Sunday, and all the incredible work that our Catechists do in our local community by bringing the Catholic faith to children in local public schools. If you are interested in becoming a Catechist or Catechist classroom helper, please speak to one of our friendly Catechists at any of our Masses this weekend.

“Being a Catechist is the most spiritually fulfilling thing I have ever done!” - Rose

What is SRE?

Special Religious Education is time set aside in Government Schools for Catholic SRE Teachers from the local Catholic Church to teach Catholic children about building a relationship with Jesus and understanding his message of Salvation. SRE is mandated by the Education Act (1990) and gives parents the choice to have children formed in the faith of their family.

Do Something of Eternal Significance!

You are invited by the Church to share our faith with children public schools by giving time each week during the school term for lesson preparation and teaching.

Delight with us in this spiritually fulfilling mission– help children to hear the Good News and encounter Jesus to live life in joy and hope as God’s family.

There's many ways you can help!
  • Become a Catechist (volunteer SRE teacher)
  • Or a Catechist classroom helper
    • Effective Catechist training
    • Easy step by step lessons
    • Start as a helper
    • Flexible and fun
  • Or help us to make fun classroom resources
  • You are also welcome to attend workshops to learn ways to help your own children or grandchildren grow in faith and love

A helper assists a Catechist in class and is not required to give a lesson; then, when you feel ready and have begun training you may like to start to prepare lessons and teach.

What do I need?

A willingness to share your faith life, as well as a Working With Children Check (WWCC) which we can help you apply for.

What help will I get?

Catechists and helpers receive ongoing support and encouragement from our Catechist group who share your faith, interests and goals. CCD provides practical training courses including compulsory safeguarding training to help you to develop teaching skills and to make the best use of your own gifts.

If you are interested in finding out more about Catechesis, please visit the CCD Sydney website https://ccd.sydneycatholic.org/ or contact the Parish Office to be put in touch with one of our experienced Catechists.
