Celebrating Fr John Alt's Diamond Jubilee

Reverend Father John Alt has faithfully served Christ and His Church for 60 years as a priest of the Archdiocese of Sydney on July 15th 2021.

John Joseph Alt was born on 11 December 1937 in Yass. His family later moved to Sydney, and he was educated at St Leonard’s Primary School, Naremburn, and the Marist Brothers’ High School, Mosman.

He commenced studies for the priesthood at the age of seventeen at St Columba’s College, Springwood, and later St Patrick’s College, Manly. He was ordained to the presbyterate by His Eminence Sir Norman Thomas Cardinal Gilroy at St Mary’s Cathedral on 15 July 1961.

From 1961-1979 Fr Alt faithfully served as Assistant Priest at the Parishes of Penshurst, Meadowbank, Bass Hill, Darlinghurst, and Chatswood, and was later appointed Administrator at the Blackheath, Camperdown, and Drummoyne Parishes. In 1980 he was appointed Administrator of Meadowbank Parish, where he later served as Parish Priest for twelve years. Following the conclusion of his twenty years of exemplary priestly service as Administrator and Pastor at Meadowbank, Fr Alt was appointed as Parish Priest of Lidcombe in 2000, a role in which he continued until his retirement to lesser duties in 2006. In the years which followed, Fr Alt has continued to assist as needed at Lidcombe and Ryde and in supply work at other Parishes.

We are so grateful to Fr John Alt for all his support and service to our Parish community at Ryde-Gladesville over the last 15 years. He is a well-loved member of our clergy and community and we congratulate him on this incredible achievement and his devotion to the work of Christ. Congrats Fr John!
